Energy
Introduction
Glide buys its electricity through Ecotricity – the first green electricity company. We're committed to offering renewable energy as standard so that's why we're now buying over 70% of our electricity from renewable sources.
Glide buys it gas through Contract Natural Gas – a leading commercial gas shipper.
Switching to Glide
The energy industry isn't the fastest moving industry in the world and that does restrict how quickly we can get your energy services active with Glide.
It takes up to 4 to 6 weeks for your gas and electricity to transfer over to us. You are responsible for paying the previous supplier up until the date on which the transfer is successful.
Glide will not bill you for your energy services until the transfer to us is complete so you will never pay twice for the same period of time. Occasionally your previous supplier may incorrectly bill you past the transfer date so we advise customers to double check and if necessary contact your old supplier. You can find out when your supply came across to Glide in your online portal.
If you are signing up with a Glide start date of more than 6 weeks in the future, we will try and transfer your gas and electricity supplies as close to your requested start date as possible. Unfortunately this isn't always possible.
Billing
The amount you pay on our monthly payment plans goes towards your energy usage. If you use less energy than you have paid on your payment plans, you'll get refunded the difference. Likewise if you use more energy than you paid on your payment plans, you will be billed for the difference. Any credit or debit will be split equally between all of the tenants.
How much energy you use is measured by your gas and electricity meters. To ensure that you are billed accurately you should provide us with meter readings when we transfer over your supply, when you move out and quarterly in between.
If you've provided accurate meter readings, you'll be able to see if you're under or over-paying in your online portal and whether you can expect a refund back at the end of your tenancy.
If you don't provide meter readings, we will bill you on estimated ones. These are calculated by looking at how much energy your property has used in the past and are independently verified.
Business customers
If you're a landlord, letting agent or property business, Glide can fix your tariff for up to 3 years to protect you from changes in the wholesale energy market.
We can also provide you with electricity smart meters free of charge and gas smart meters for £60+VAT. These mean you get accurate information on your tenants' energy on a daily basis and you'll never need to take a meter reading ever again!

Energy-saving tips
We recommend trying these energy saving tips to reduce your usage:
- Run your heating for just one hour less every day. For most modern boilers, you can adjust the length of time that they are turned on for. An hour less in the morning or evening could significantly reduce your energy bill.
- Keep your curtains closed when it is dark. You lose a lot of heating energy through your windows, even with double glazing. If you close your curtains more often this will keep the heat in.
- Turn off electrical equipment at the Plug. If you leave many electrical appliances on standby rather than turned-off at the plug socket you will use more energy.
- We recommend running washing machines on full loads to increase efficiency and if possible avoid using a dryer for items that could be hung dried.
- If you are boiling your kettle, only fill it for the water you need at the time. It requires lots of energy to boil a kettle and if you only fill it up to a level required this energy saving quickly builds up throughout the year.
- Use energy-efficient light bulbs. These are usually slightly more expensive than regular bulbs but produce less heat and therefore use less energy.
Prepayment meters
When you sign up for Glide at a property with prepayment meters, we normally remove the prepayment meters for you. There is a charge of £100+VAT per meter that needs to be exchanged.
We only install prepayment meters where you have an overdue debt and have failed to arrange a sensible repayment plan.
