Energy

Introduction

Glide buys its electricity through Drax Power. Drax is a FTSE 250 company that meets 7% of the UK's electricity needs. By working with Drax, Glide can forward buy its electricity, meaning that we can fix your tariffs.

Glide buys its gas on the wholesale market.

We can fix your electricity and gas tariffs for up to 3 years. For tenants this means that we can fix your tariffs for the duration of your tenancy. For businesses, we can fix the energy prices for your property portfolio ensuring that you won't be affected by changes in the wholesale energy markets.

Switching to Glide

The energy industry isn't the fastest moving industry in the world and that does restrict how quickly we can get your energy services active with Glide.

It takes at least 3 weeks for your electricity and 5 weeks for your gas to transfer over to us. You are responsible for paying the previous supplier up until the date on which the transfer is successful. Occasionally your previous supplier will incorrectly bill you past the transfer date so we advise customers to double check and complain, where appropriate, to your previous supplier.

If you are signing up with a Glide start date of more than 6 weeks in the future, we will try and transfer your gas and electricity supplies as close to your requested start date as possible. Unfortunately this isn't always possible.

Prepayment meters

When you sign up for Glide at a property with prepayment meters, we normally remove the prepayment meters for you. There may be a charge for the new meter and its installation.

We only install prepayment meters where you have an overdue debt and have failed to arrange a sensible repayment plan.

Billing

The amount you pay depends on how much energy you use. How much energy you use is measured by your gas and electricity meters. To ensure that you are billed accurately you should provide us with regular meter readings (at the start and end, and at least quarterly during your tenanacy).

The amount that you pay on our monthly payment plans goes towards your energy usage. If you use less energy than you have paid on your payment plans, you will be refunded the difference. Likewise if you use more energy than you have paid on your payment plans, you will be billed for the difference. For tenants, any credit or debit will be split equally between all of the tenants.

If you don't provide meter readings, we will bill you on an estimated meter reading. If you subsequently provide an accurate meter reading, this will take effect from your next bill.

Sourcing our electricity

Our electricity fuel mix for year ending March 2011 is below:

Source of Electricity Percentage
Natural Gas 36%
Renewable 31%
Coal 26%
Nuclear 4%
Other 3%

Renewable electricity

Glide's green electricity product has been designed to help reduce your environmental impact. When you opt for Glide green electricity, your electricity is generated from a 100% renewable source. We buy our renewable energy from Drax Power using biomass as a source of fuel. Put simply, biomass is a form of stored solar energy. It is organic, plant-based material and has been used as an energy source for many years to produce heat. Biomass is plentiful – it is the world's fourth largest energy resource. It is renewable and is sustainable over its entire lifecycle to deliver significant carbon savings.

Today the technology to generate electricity from biomass is well established and we choose Drax because they are the market leader in biomass generation.
